Evaluating Training Programs: The
Don Kirkpatrick Four Level Certification Program |
|
 |
|
|
Event Overview
This program will be led by Jim Kirkpatrick,
Ph.D., the son of the legendary Donald
Kirkpatrick.
Don and Jim use the PIE approach
(Don’s invention) – Practical, Interactive, and
Enjoyable. Jim will be delivering this
program in person. Don will participate via the
presenting of his ideas through a DVD. in two
ways. In it, Don explains keys to effectively
leveraging the four levels. Excerpts of the DVD
will be used throughout the program. Other
methods of delivery will include presentation,
case studies, breakout exercises, and large
group discussions. A plan of action will be
developed and shared by participants at the end
of the program.
Four level evaluation is well
known throughout the world. That is the good
news. The bad news is that it is rarely
implemented effectively. Evaluation is not
something that is added on at the end of a
course or program. Rather, it is to be
integrated and woven into the fabric of the
program design process.
One of the cutting edge
learning you will receive is just how to
accomplish that, and how to create maximum
leverage with your internal business partners to
be seen as a strong contributor to the bottom
line. Additionally, you will learn the basic
principles of four level evaluation including
tools, methodologies, and instructions to
evaluate any type of training course or program.
On a higher level, you will learn to attack
training’s biggest challenges – transferring
learning to behavior and demonstrating the value
of training. This can be done by leveraging
business leaders, and using strategic
dashboards.

Seminar OutlineThe 3-day program will
consist of a number of modules. These are all
action-oriented, and guaranteed to be oriented towards
practical, immediate applications of the four levels.
The specific modules include:
Module 1: Welcome and introductions
We will spend time getting acquainted as we set the
stage for good interaction and the sharing of best
practices among us.
Module 2: Kirkpatrick Four Level Evaluation —
Major Principles
We will study the history of the four levels, their
original 3 purposes (to continue programs, to improve
programs, to demonstrate training value), and the basics
of each level. Addition purposes of evaluation that will
be covered will include ensuring compliance, maximizing
training effectiveness, and aligning training with the
business. Evaluating Training Programs, 2006, will form
the foundation for this model.
Module 3: Kirkpatrick Four Level Evaluation Tools
We will show you a variety of evaluation tools used
by companies that have provided case studies for our
books. We will show you how and when to use each, as
well as pros and cons. This interactive session will
also provide for you to tell us what works in your
organization.
Module 4: Implementing Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels
It is not much good to have a toolbox full of
Kirkpatrick tools and not be able to use them
effectively. This module will show you which are best
for each of the six purposes of evaluation.
Module 5: Global Best Practice Case Studies
Module 6: Attacking training’s two biggest
challenges.
Part 1. We will attack the first of what Don and Jim
call training’s two biggest challenges – getting people
to apply (L3) what they have learned (L2). Best
practices, case studies, and exercises will be used to
present tried and true methods for accomplishing this.
Principals from Transferring Learning to Behavior, 2005
will be used for this module.
Part 2. We will attack the second challenge in this
module – how to demonstrate the value of training to
line-managers and executives. This interactive session
will also use case studies and exercises to accomplish
the objective.
Module 7: Leveraging Strategic Business Success
Module 8: Personal Action Planning
