Event Overview

This program will be led by Jim Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., the son of the legendary Donald Kirkpatrick.

Don and Jim use the PIE approach (Don’s invention) – Practical, Interactive, and Enjoyable. Jim will be delivering this program in person. Don will participate via the presenting of his ideas through a DVD. in two ways. In it, Don explains keys to effectively leveraging the four levels. Excerpts of the DVD will be used throughout the program. Other methods of delivery will include presentation, case studies, breakout exercises, and large group discussions. A plan of action will be developed and shared by participants at the end of the program.

Training Evaluation is not something that is added on at the end of a course or program. Rather, it is to be integrated and woven into the fabric of the program design process. One of the cutting edge learning you will receive is just how to accomplish that, and how to create maximum leverage with your internal business partners to be seen as a strong contributor to the bottom line.

Additionally, you will learn about the foundations of the basics of evaluation; methods, tools, and techniques for evaluating each of the four levels; a methodology for executing an effective evaluation plan for any given course or program, and ways to strengthen your organization to enhance its readiness for evaluation. On a higher level, you will learn how to attach training’s two biggest challenges through evaluation – how to get people to apply what they have learned, and how to demonstrate the value of learning.

Seminar Outline

The 2-day program will consist of a number of modules. These are all action-oriented, and guaranteed to be oriented toward practical, immediate applications of the four levels. The specific modules include:

Module 1: Welcome and introductions.

We will spend time getting acquainted as we set the stage for good interaction and the sharing of best practices among us.

Module 2: Foundations of the Four Levels.

We will study the history of the four levels, their purpose, their relevance today, and the basics of each level. We will also present the purposes of evaluation which include 1) to improve programs, 2) to demonstrate the value of learning, 3) to help drive the execution of organizational strategy. Evaluating Training Programs, 2006 will form the foundation for this module.

Module 3: Building an evaluation toolkit.

We will present to you a number of evaluation methods and tools for each of the four levels. We will show you how they work together to gather the right kind of evidence to be able to demonstrate the value of a course or program. This interactive session will also provide time for small groups to work with the tools.

Module 4: Building an evaluation methodology.

It is not enough just to have a toolkit full of good evaluation tools. One must know how and when to use them. This module will show a step-by-step methodology of how to effectively and efficiently evaluate any course or program.

Module 5: Attacking training’s two biggest challenges.

Part 1. We will attack the first of what Don and Jim call training’s two biggest challenges – getting people to apply (L3) what they have learned (L2).

Best practices, case studies, and exercises will be used to present tried and true methods for Accomplishing this. Principals from Transferring Learning to Behavior, 2005 will be used for this module.

Module 6: Attack training’s two biggest challenges.

Part 2. We will attack the second challenge in this module – how to demonstrate the value of training to line-managers and executives. This interactive session will also use case studies and exercises to accomplish the objective.
